The Carna Conservation Initiative is part of the wider Coastal Communities charity and environmental network.

Carna Coast and Communities

In August 2025, after years of dreaming and months of meetings, Carna Coast and Communities achieved charitable status.

“We are a community based group who are passionate about bringing people together to understand and respond to the changing environments of Loch Sunart and the surrounding waters and coastline, and the interplay between land, sea and people.” Sarah Brooks

The charity exists to conserve and regenerate the rich biodiversity of the Isle of Carna and the surrounding waters of Loch Sunart, Loch Teacuis and Drom Buidhe. In pursuit of that purpose we aim to:

  • Share our learnings openly with others
  • Work hand in hand with local communities to protect and enhance these unique marine and terrestrial ecosystems for current and future generations
  • Raise awareness of the coastal marine environment and carry out baseline surveys and monitoring of marine habitats, species and conditions, with the aim of protecting and restoring what we find
  • Do the same for the terrestrial environment, using restorative land management practices to protect and improve habitats on land
  • Develop partnerships with individuals and organisations who share our aspirations
  • Explore and develop nature-friendly skills and opportunities for local communities
  • Promote sustainable tourism and best practice in the area

If you want to be part of this community, have a project you think we could support, or a skill you would like to share, we would love to hear from you. Get in touch at hello@isleofcarna.org
