When to visit the Isle of Carna

All four seasons bring something unique to Carna.
Here’s what our guests love about each one.
Spring on Carna

As the island wakes from its winter rest, daffodils and primroses push through, ferns and bracken uncurl and the quality of light on the water is something to behold. Walking is easy before the undergrowth takes hold, making it a wonderful time to explore the island at a gentle pace.
Summer on Carna

Long evenings, warm light and spectacular sunsets. Summer is a hive of activity on the island; eagle nesting season is in full swing, otters are easier to spot in the late afternoon light and rare butterflies flutter around the meadows. Brave the loch for a swim off the pontoon, or simply enjoy long, unhurried walks in the sunshine. Whether wildlife, walking, or time with family and friends brings you here, summer on Carna will pleasantly surprise you.
Autumn on Carna

The bracken turns russet brown, herons stand patient in the shallows and stags bellow across the loch as evening falls. The golden light is perfect for sketching, boating and photography. Pull on a wetsuit and snorkel in the loch before heading home to a warming meal and a log fire as night draws in.
Winter on Carna

The island is magical in winter. If seclusion, dark skies and deep tranquillity are what you’re after, this is the season to come. Cosy evenings in by a roaring fire with a book, a board game or a dram of local whisky, and come morning, a brisk walk along the shore to find the seals.
